Safety, Protection & Compliance
Racking fails progressively. Everything here interrupts that sequence.
Rack protection
The bottom 400 mm of an upright takes every impact and carries the whole load.

Column guard / upright protector
ManufacturedAlso called: rack guard, post protector
400–1,200 mm high · steel or polymer · bolted or clip-on
Fitted to every aisle-facing upright at minimum. Polymer types deform and recover; steel ones transfer the impact to the floor fixing.

Load notice board & SWL sign
ManufacturedAlso called: rack load sign, safe working load plate
Per run · states bay and level loads
A legal requirement in most jurisdictions and a practical one everywhere: nobody can respect a limit they cannot read.

Beam safety lock & pin
ManufacturedPositive locking clip per beam end
Prevents a beam lifting out when a fork catches it underneath. Missing pins are the single most common finding in a rack audit.

End-of-aisle barrier
ManufacturedAlso called: rack end protector, end frame barrier
Free-standing, floor-fixed steel
The end frame is where a truck turns in and where the worst impacts happen. A separate barrier keeps that impact off the rack entirely.

Pallet back stop
ManufacturedAlso called: row spacer stop, back-to-back stop
Rear beam stop in back-to-back runs
Stops a pallet being pushed into the aisle behind — an unseen fall from height onto whoever is working there.

Anti-collapse mesh & cladding
ManufacturedAlso called: rack back mesh, mesh cladding
Mesh panels to rear and side faces
Required wherever a walkway, pick face or public area runs behind or beside racking.

Rack guide rail
ManufacturedAlso called: aisle guide rail, floor guide
Continuous floor-fixed rail
Steers the truck down the aisle. Mandatory in VNA, and useful anywhere aisles are tight.

Shims, footplates & anchors
ManufacturedLevelling shims, base plates, expansion anchors
An out-of-plumb frame loses capacity fast. Shimming and anchoring is installation quality, not an accessory.
Floor marking, signage & spill control
Rules made visible where the work happens.

Floor marking tape & paint
SuppliedPVC tape, epoxy paint or thermoplastic
Aisles, walkways, staging, quarantine and no-go zones. Thermoplastic survives forklift traffic; tape does not.

Aisle, rack & location signage
ManufacturedHanging aisle signs, rack end boards, zone signs
Wayfinding and the WMS address scheme made physical.

Safety signage
SuppliedMandatory, warning, prohibition and information
Pictogram-led so it works across the languages actually spoken on the floor.

Floor marker, footprint & corner
SuppliedAdhesive shapes and pallet footprints
Defines staging positions precisely enough that people use them.

Anti-fatigue & anti-slip matting
SuppliedWorkstation mats, wet-area matting
Standing stations and any surface that gets wet.

Spill kit & containment
SuppliedOil, chemical and general kits · bunds and drip trays
Placed at the risk, not in a store cupboard. Response time is the whole point.

First aid station
SuppliedCabinet, kit and register
Stocked, signed and checked against a register.

Emergency eyewash & safety shower
SuppliedPlumbed or portable
Wherever chemicals are decanted or stored in bulk.

Lockout / tagout equipment
SuppliedAlso called: LOTO
Padlocks, hasps, tags and stations
Maintenance on conveyors, balers and powered equipment.
PPE & personal protection
The last line, after layout, barriers and procedure.

Safety helmet
SuppliedWith chin strap where working at height
Mandatory under racking work and in any area with overhead handling.

Safety footwear
SuppliedSteel or composite toe · anti-slip · anti-static options
The most-used PPE in a warehouse and the item most often bought too cheap.

Hi-visibility clothing
SuppliedVest, jacket or coverall · retro-reflective
Non-negotiable wherever trucks and pedestrians share space.

Hand protection
SuppliedCut, impact, chemical and cold-store grades
Cut level matched to the material handled — strapping and sheet metal need more than a general glove.

Eye and face protection
SuppliedGoggles, spectacles, face shields
Strapping, cutting, decanting and cleaning operations.

Hearing protection
SuppliedPlugs and ear defenders
Around compressors, balers and processing plant.

Respiratory protection
SuppliedDust masks to full-face respirators
Dust, fume and chemical decanting.

Fall arrest harness & lanyard
SuppliedFull-body harness with rated anchor points
Any work on a mezzanine edge, a man-up cage or a roof. The anchor point matters as much as the harness.

Cold store clothing
SuppliedFreezer suits, gloves and boots
Rotation limits matter as much as clothing in a −25 °C store.
Barriers, bollards & pedestrian segregation
Keeping trucks and people apart. Works when everything else fails.

Safety barrier & guardrail
ManufacturedSteel or polymer · single or double rail
Segregates walkways, protects plant, defines pedestrian routes.

Bollard
ManufacturedFixed, removable or collapsible
Point protection at corners, doors, columns and equipment.

Corner and column protector
ManufacturedWrap-around polymer or steel
Building columns take as many hits as racking and are considerably more expensive to repair.

Pedestrian walkway barrier & handrail
ManufacturedContinuous with defined crossings
Crossings should be few and deliberate. Many crossings mean the route is wrong.

Convex and dome safety mirror
SuppliedCorner, aisle and dome types
Blind aisle intersections and corners.

Speed hump & traffic calming
SuppliedModular rubber sections
Yard and internal roadway speed control.

Machine and cell guarding
To orderMesh panel with interlocked gates
Around automation and moving plant.

Impact and proximity warning system
SuppliedAlso called: forklift proximity alert, blue spot light
Projected light or RF proximity
Warns pedestrians of an approaching truck before it appears around the rack.
Rack inspection & structural audit
On a schedule, by someone competent, against a written standard.

Annual rack safety inspection
To orderAlso called: rack audit, PRRS-style inspection
Full survey with green / amber / red damage classification
Red means unload now. Amber means repair within a stated window. Green means monitor. The classification is what makes the report actionable.

Weekly visual inspection regime
To orderTrained internal inspector · logged
Between annual inspections. Someone on the floor must own it by name.

Damage reporting & repair
ManufacturedUpright, beam, brace and footplate replacement
Damaged components are replaced, never straightened — cold-worked steel does not return to its rated capacity.

Load testing & certification
To orderPhysical or calculated verification
For mezzanines, platforms and any modified racking.

Re-rating & load chart update
To orderRecalculation after a layout change
Changing beam pitch changes the upright's rated capacity. The old load notice is then wrong and dangerously so.

Operator and safety training
To orderRack awareness, damage spotting, safe loading
The people who cause the damage are the people best placed to report it.
Fire detection & suppression
Rack height, flue space and decking decide the sprinkler design.

In-rack sprinkler
SuppliedAt intermediate levels within the racking
Required above certain heights and commodity classes. Solid decking blocks it, which is why mesh is specified.

Ceiling sprinkler system
SuppliedAlso called: ESFR, wet or dry riser system
ESFR or conventional
ESFR can sometimes avoid in-rack heads entirely, but only within stated storage height and commodity limits.

Flue space & rack clearance provision
ManufacturedTransverse and longitudinal flues held open
A design parameter, not an accessory. Blocking flues with over-wide pallets defeats the sprinkler design.

Fire extinguisher & stand
SuppliedABC, CO₂, foam and water types
Type matched to the risk. Mounted, signed and inspected.

Hose reel & hydrant
SuppliedInternal and external
Statutory in most warehouse occupancies over a threshold area.

Smoke, heat & flame detection
SuppliedPoint, beam or aspirating
Beam detectors suit high-bay sheds where point detectors are unreachable and slow to respond.

Fire alarm panel & sounder
SuppliedAddressable · zoned
Zoning should match the aisle plan so an evacuation instruction means something specific.

Emergency lighting & exit signage
SuppliedMaintained · battery-backed
Egress routes stay legible when the power does not.

Fire door & fire curtain
SuppliedRated assemblies
Compartmentation between storage zones.
